I Know What You Did, I’m Just Not Sure Why

by

One thing is true. Biblically, angels are warriors.

The last two episodes of Supernatural (”I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Heaven and Hell”) were basically one long ep. They were all about a young woman, Anna, who was being hunted by angels and demons alike. I’m just not buying it.

Look, I’ve this kind of love/hate relationship going on with Supernatural from the very beginning. Don’t misunderstand me, I really like the show, but sometimes they take it (I’m not sure who I mean by “they,” but probably the writers) in directions that I just don’t get. It’s like I don’t want to follow them around that bend.

Plus, in the last few episodes, it seems like the good lines are all being forced. Like they are having to try too hard to be quirky. Or is the word “hip?” Do people even use the word hip anymore? But, you probably know what I mean. Its like they want to talk using all these pop culture references, but they don’t really fit where they’ve been placed. They’re just trying too hard.

I also have issues with the overall theme of demons and angels. It a little difficult to explain what I mean, but its like they’ve made angels into bad guys, demons into good guys and heaven into a place you’d rather not be. Anna is supposed to be a fallen angel, but fallen by choice. I doubt that’s possible or even probable, but let’s say I buy it. Can an angel, even a fallen one, be that carnal? I mean, she even said that having sex was better than being in heaven. Please. But I guess that’s how Satan sees it, and he’s a fallen angel, so maybe I’m wrong.

Beyond all that, I have some issues with their own sense of continuity (or even their sense of what makes sense). In last week’s ep, when Dean and Sam first meet up with Anna, she says that Sam and Dean were all the angels had been talking about for weeks. Then this week when Dean asks Anna why the angels saved him, she said that they hadn’t spoken about it. So what were the angels saying about them?

Then, Uriel called Dean a monkey in clothes. Um, being an angel, wouldn’t Uriel be presumed to believe in creation as opposed to evolution? Just a thought.

Finally, Dean telling Sam about his time in hell. If he was in hell for 40 years, how would he have know where to find Bobby, initially. I mean, did he really remember the guy’s address after 40 years of torture? I can barely remember my own sister’s address if I don’t look it up to be sure. Also, he said he spent the last 10 years torturing souls. Really? Didn’t we see him pop off that rack of pain right before he was pulled out of hell?

I don’t know, maybe I’m being too nitpicky. It wouldn’t be the first time. I’ll definitely stick with the show through this season. At this point, we’ll have to wait to see what’s next, since there won’t be another new episode until January 15, 2009.

Oh, and one more thing. I still miss the old Ruby.

About Watching The CW

The CW was born in September 2006, and inherited a mixture of programming from its parents the WB and UPN. The CW has a diverse line up from Monday night comedy to Friday Night Smackdown. In between the laughs and the wrestling are alternate reality or fantasy based shows (Supernatural, Smallville), ones that are fit to bursting with bright young things (Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill) and don't forget all the wannabes trying to make it in reality programming (The Beauty & the Geek, America's Next Top Model, Pussy Cat Dolls). This blog will review, recap, share spoilers and other cool finds related to the CW's programming.
