Hulu Awards: This Is It

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

psychoThis is it, the end of the Hulu Awards polls. I’m lumping these last two categories in together, just cause I can. Don’t forget to check my other blog, Watching Sitcoms, to see my recent post with several other polls. I understand that there are still about two weeks left to vote on all these polls. I’m not exactly sure what happens after this, but I imagine that once all the results are tallied, we’ll have a little party. Or more probably an awards ceremony, but you know what I mean.

So, here we go. The first of the final two categories is Best Non Comedy Clip. The nominees are Field of Dreams: Ray and his Dad Play Catch, My Cousin Vinny: Expert Witness, NBC News Time Capsule: Martin Luther King Speech, Presidential Inaugurations: Obama’s Inauguration, Psycho: Shower Scene, Scarface: Say Hello to My Little Friend and The Usual Suspects: Interrogation.

These are all really amazing and classic scene, aside the Inauguration, which just happened. But I had to go with my personal favorite, the Psycho Shower Scene. Here’s the poll:

animal_house_belushi_toga1The second of the final categories is Best Comedic Clip. The nominees are 30 Rock: Jenna on Hardball, Animal House: Toga Guitar Smash, Arrested Development: Making Fun of Michael, The Big Lebowski: Don’t Fuck With Jesus, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Spin Class, Office Space: Peter’s Interview, The Office: Goodbye, Toby, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Shaun of the Dead: Throwing Records and SNL: Dick in a Box.

Once again, there are several funny clips here. I had to go with the one I think of as the most classic, once again, that is Animal House: Toga Guitar Smash. I’ve always loved that scene, the way Bluto just grabs the guitar away from the guy who’s singing, smashes it to pieces and then calmly hands it back. But if I was making a second choice, it would probably be Office Space: Peter’s Interview. Here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Worst Scripted Television Show

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

ff_raves_heroes1_fHere’s the Hulu Award poll for the category of Worst Scripted Television Show. The nominees are Heroes, Knight Rider, The Munsters Today, One Tree Hill, Team Knight Rider and Testees.

Are they just kidding me about Heroes? I mean, its clearly not Shakespeare, but Worst Scripted Television Show?? Whatever.

To be honest with you, Heroes is the only one of those shows that I watch. The only one I’ve ever actually even seen. I wanted to watch an ep of the others, just to get a feel for each of them, but I didn’t. I’m just too busy now that I’m back to working full-time to waste time watching bad shows.

I found it interesting that both Knight Rider and Team Knight Rider made the list. I know they can’t be talking about the original show with David Hasselhoff, because who doesn’t love the Hoff. I mean, really?

One Tree Hill got a safe pass because its on the CW and I can’t vote against anything on the CW now, can I?

So my bottom line is, I knew I wasn’t voting for Heroes to be the worst, or anything that might possibly have the Hoff in it, or anything on the CW, so that only left The Munsters Today and something called Testees.

Well, mostly just cause I didn’t like the name, Testees got my vote for the Worst Scripted Television Show on the Hulu Awards. You can feel free to vote for it, too.

Here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Worst Web Original

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

gorgeoustinySince we just did Best Web Original in the Hulu Awards, it’s clearly time for Worst Web Original. The nominees are Barely Political, Comedy Gumbo, Dating Brad Garret, Destination X and Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show.

I was a little unhappy to see Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show on the “worst” list cause it was one of the shows that seemed to get good reviews and ratings. Plus, I had watched a bit of it and it seemed kinda funny. But, overall, the rest of the shows on the list, I think, belong there. I was just glad that Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog didn’t make both lists, cause there was some indication - which I am sure was just a joke - that someone on the panel voted for it to be on the worst list.

Speaking of Dr. Horrible, I did note during my last visit to Hulu, just moments ago, that the Dr. Horrible video is about to end its run. Meaning that if there is still anyone out there that hasn’t seen it, you only have a few more days to do so. Or, you know, you can just order the DVD and watch it every day (several times) like the rest of us. Um, not that I would ever do that. I mean, I was just saying that probably some people, you know, the really geeky kind of people who get all involved with shows and actors and writers who they will never meet in this life time, but who they think they really know, and . . . um, never mind.

So, here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Best Web Original

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

untitled2I think we all know what show should get the Hulu Award for Best Web Original.  And if you don’t, here’s a little hint: there’s singing, dancing, laughter, laundry, frozen yogurt, frothy beers, and death. Still have no idea? Here’s a link to my other blog where I blather on about how wonderful this show really is, including (and here’s another hint) the musical commentary on the DVD. Still don’t know? Well, then, you’re clearly not a geek. But I mean that in the nicest possible way. Really.

OK, I’ll spell it out for you. Go vote for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Vote early, vote often. Stay up all night voting if you have to. Dr. Horrible must - and I mean absolutely has to (and I cannot stress this enough) - receive the Hulu Award for Best Web Original.

It’s just one more part in Joss Whedon’s master plan to take over the universe and I, for one, am fully in agreement with that happening.

So now, I can list all the nominees for Best Web Original, but as far as I’m concerned none of the others even count. At all. OK, fine, the nominees are Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, National Geographic Animals, National Geographic Environment, National Geographic Travel and Spacerip.

I mean, what are those other shows anyway? Has anyone even watched them? Does anyone want to? Heck, NO! So don’t waste any more time.

Here’s the poll.  You know what you have to do.

Hulu Awards: Worst Reality Show

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Here’s just one more poll on the Hulu Awards. This one is for the Worst Reality Show. Although I watch way more reality shows than I’d like to admit, I really don’t like reality. I mean, honestly, I watch lots of these shows just so I can blog about them. People seem to like them and since I want people to read my blogs . . . you see how that works? Sure you do. So, therefore, I watch reality TV. Not to say there aren’t some exceptions to that. I love American Idol and I doubt you could get more cheesy reality TV than that.

The Hulu Award nominees for Worst Reality Show are Denise Richards: It’s Complicated, Hey Paula, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Living Lohan and Temptation Island.

I’ve never seen one ep of any of these shows. (more…)

Hulu Awards: Best Cooking/Food Show

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

We’re coming back to the Hulu Awards. Remember, I’m on the panel and voting for all these shows. I put some of the polls on my other blog, as well, watchingsitcoms.com.

I’m a fan of food shows. I love to eat and I love to cook, so I watch them and get great ideas on interesting meals to make, and ways to make the foods I cook easier and faster. So, all that being said, I’ve seen all the shows in the finals of this category at least once or twice. Most of them I’ve watched regularly.

The nominees are 30 Minute Meals, Ace of Cakes, Good Eats, Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and Top Chef.

Probably my fave is 30 Minute Meals. I’d say its mostly cause it gives me lots of great ideas for cooking quick and different meals. But I also love Alton Brown on Good Eats. He’s just so much fun and he’s able to boil a complex process down to simple steps. Pun intended.

I’m not even sure I think the other shows fit into the same category as those two. I mean, really, are Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and Top Chef cooking shows? As for Ace of Cakes, honestly, I’ve only seen it a couple of times, but it seems almost more like its a crafty show. Um, I mean, it doesn’t teach you how to bake a cake, it shows you how they create really interesting cakes for special events.

Bottom line, they are all great shows. So vote early and vote often. Here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Best Non-Competitive Reality Show

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Here’s the last poll for this blog (for now anyway) in the Hulu Awards. This one is for the Best Non-Competitive Reality Show. The nominees are 30 Days, America’s Most Wanted, Destination Truth, Ghost Hunters, Queer Eye and Pressure Cook.

This category is less easy, since I’ve never really watched any of these shows. Well, I’ve cast an occasional glance at Queer Eye, I’ve sat through some of an ep of Ghost Hunters on Halloween, I’ve had a glimpse of America’s Most Wanted while flipping channels. But I’ve never really sat and watched any of them as a regular show.

So, I said all that to say this. I have no idea which show should get my vote. I guess I could go to the site and read the reviews, I could check the ratings, and do some of the other things I’ve been doing all along to help me make voting decisions for the shows about which I know very little (let’s call it nothing) about. But since most of the shows are so well known, it just seems like it shouldn’t be necessary. It seems like I should have an opinion.

So here’s my thought process. (more…)

Hulu Awards: Best Celebrity Driven Reality Show

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Still in reality TV land, the next category in the Hulu Awards polls is the Best Celebrity Driven Reality Show. Those nominees are Clean House, The Girls Next Door, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List, Kitchen Nightmares and Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.

This category is a little bit easier, since the only one of those shows I watch with any regularity is Kitchen Nightmares. I wouldn’t want to watch anything with Kathy Griffin, cause I think she’s just too rude. I don’t really like that kind of humor. I don’t mean rude in the sense (more…)

Hulu Awards: Best Competitive Reality Show

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Next we have some nominations for reality shows in the Hulu Awards.  First up is the Best Competitive Reality Show.  The nominees are The Biggest Loser, Hell’s Kitchen, Last Comic Standing, Project Runway, Top Chef and Make Me A Supermodel.

I’ve actually watched every single one of those shows, except Make Me A Supermodel, at one point or another.  I like them all. Which is strange, actually, because I’ve never really thought of myself as a reality TV kind of person. But in my defense, I would probably say that these competitive reality shows maybe have a little more going on than some others, over all. Some reality shows (more…)

Hulu Awards: Best Movie Comedy

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

I’d like to say Yay for a Hulu Awards category where I’m familiar with the nominees.  The next category is Best Movie Comedy.  I’m a fan of the comedy movie.  But here’s the catch.  I’d like to say “yay” but unfortunately, I’ve only seen two of the final five nominees.  Does that seem right to you?  I can just only suppose that most of the other great comedies I’ve seen just haven’t made their way onto Hulu yet.

So, here are the nominees for Best Comedy MovieEddie Murphy: Raw, Ghostbusters, Men In Black, Raising Arizona and Three Amigos.

Without telling you which two I’ve seen, before anything else, actually, I think the winner should be (more…)

Hulu Awards: Best Horror Movie

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

More Hulu Awards. This time it’s for the Best Horror Movie. I guess I’ve mentioned that I like the movie categories since I like to watch movies and I’ve seen most of them. This time, however, that’s not true. This time I really haven’t seen them. And it’s not just cause they are horror movies either, cause I do like horror movies. Just not any of these, apparently.

The nominees are Best Horror Movie are 28 Days Later, Christine, Naked Lunch, The Thing and When a Stranger Calls.

First off, I’ve never even heard of Naked Lunch. I checked it out and it sounds weird, but it did win 13 awards and was nominated for another 5 on top of that. So it can’t be too bad.

I read the books for both Christine and When a Stranger Calls, when I was younger. Oh, wait, that was When Michael Calls. But whatever, I never saw either movie.

Nor did I see 28 Days Later, although I did see 28 Days with Sandra Bullock (fine, I know it’s not in any way related and not a horror movie) and 28 Weeks Later. However, 28 Days Later did receive 7 awards and 21 nominations. As for The Thing, I have a vague memory that I may have seen it once, a thousand years ago, but I really don’t recall.

If we are going to base this on awards, the winner should be either Naked Lunch or 28 Days Later, since none of the others won anything (The Thing had three nominations, Christine had two and When a Stranger Calls had a mere one).

I still don’t know which one I’m voting for, so please, share some opinions with me.

Here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Best Dramatic Movie

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Next up in the Hulu Awards, we have the award for Best Dramatic Movie. One of the great things about this category, to me anyway, is that I’ve actually seen most of the movies and I have an opinion about them. Even the ones I hadn’t seen, I’d at least heard about and that made it much easier to vote for the ones I liked best and thought should be final nominees for the Best Dramatic Movie. Some of these categories have been really difficult just because they were so unfamiliar.

So, the final nominees for Best Dramatic Movie are: The Karate Kid, Lost in Translation, Of Mice and Men, Sense and Sensibility and Sleepless in Seattle.

The only thing that makes this decision hard is that there is more than one movie that I think is worthy of the title and I can only vote for one at this stage. The Karate Kid, Of Mice and Men and Sleepless in Seattle are, in my opinion, classics. They are the movies that everyone has seen and will mostly likely see again. More than once. So I felt that the best pic should be chosen from those three. That’s not to say that I have anything against Lost in Translation or Sense and Sensibility. I just think that they are the newest of the movies, 2003 and 1995, respectively, compared with the others, and somehow I view both as “niche” movies. I just feel like they will mostly appeal to a specific crowd and may not have the more universal appeal of the others.

In the end, I chose Sleepless in Seattle, which may be a bit against my earlier argument, since it was the next newest (1993) and not everyone likes romantic comedies. But when I stopped to think about it, I knew that if I was gonna sit and watch one of those right now, that would be the one.

Well, here’s the poll:

Hulu Awards: Best Anime TV Show

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

In my other blog, watchingsitcoms, in posting the poll for Best Cartoon Series in the Hulu Awards, I spoke about my dislike (or whatever you want to call it) with adult cartoons. I just don’t watch them and I don’t usually consider them as real, somehow.

So now here, I’m going to list the shows nominated for the Best Anime TV Show. I know absolutely next to nothing about Anime. Maybe even less than that. So as I have been voting, I’ve had to rely upon the reviews of others, who, hopefully, know more than I do. Of course, I’ve also given the last few shows which were nominated a look-see, but since the genre does not appeal to me, it’s hard to determine what’s “good” as opposed to not good.

About Watching The CW

The CW was born in September 2006, and inherited a mixture of programming from its parents the WB and UPN. The CW has a diverse line up from Monday night comedy to Friday Night Smackdown. In between the laughs and the wrestling are alternate reality or fantasy based shows (Supernatural, Smallville), ones that are fit to bursting with bright young things (Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill) and don't forget all the wannabes trying to make it in reality programming (The Beauty & the Geek, America's Next Top Model, Pussy Cat Dolls). This blog will review, recap, share spoilers and other cool finds related to the CW's programming.
